About University of Iowa

The University of Iowa, commonly known as just Iowa or simply U of I or UI, is a public state-funded research university in Iowa City, which is the county seat of Johnson County, as well as the 5th largest city in the state of Iowa, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 68 000 inhabitants (2008). The city was established on January 21, 1839, by an act of Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory, and it was the 2nd capital of the Iowa Territory, as well as the 1st capital of Iowa US State.

The university was officially founded as The State University of Iowa (the current legal name of the university), on February 25, 1855, as the 1st public institution of higher learning in the state, 59 days after Iowa became a state, and despite its name it shouldn’t be confused with Iowa State University.

Since it was founded, UI rapidly grew, being considered today a Public Ivy, also being a member of the Big Ten Conference, the American Association of Universities, and the Universities Research Association. According to a 2008 article in the U.S. News & World Report, UI is the 26th best public university in the nation, and its Tippie College of Business was ranked one of the top 50 business schools in the nation, by Business Week.

The athletic teams from UI are known as the Iowa Hawkeyes, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I-A and in the Big Ten Conference, in various sports, being best known for their achievements in football, wrestling and men’s basketball. The football team plays their home games at the Kinnick Stadium, which was named after the famous Iowa football player, Nile Kinnick, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1939.

The list of notable UI alumni contains names such as Jonathan Babineaux, who is a professional football player for the Atlanta Falcons, actor Gene Wilder, Bruce Braley - U.S. Congressman from Iowa's First District, Tennesee Williams - Pulitzer Prize winning writer, William B. Morgan – naval architect, as well as many other great people.
